A good a/c shop will put a machine on the system and do a vacuum leak test for around 45 minutes or so to check for leaks...some just use a sniffer but only sure way to tell is with vacuum. They may use a sniffer afterwards to pinpoint the leak or use dye. They will let you know of any problems but you may want to get a few other estimates too depending on the price and repairs, if any, needed.

it is usally about $120.00 to charge it up and put dye in the system. they will bring it to proper specs and the dye will leak at the spot thats leaking. it usually pays for the second visit to see what is leaking. make sure that is the case before you take it . you dont have to have a dealer do it but i would check pricing, probably not much different. and make sure they dye it or you will probably be wasting money
