Crate training works wonders. If your puppy has an accident in the crate you must clean it up *immediately* !!! If you let a puppy sit in his own pee, he will learn that it is OK and he will pee and poop in his crate and lay in it as an adult. So keep your puppy on a feeding/watering schedule and take him out after he eats to go potty.

I'm not accusing you of this, but there are insane people on here who would suggest hitting your puppy to housebreak him.
NEVER EVER scream at, shake, hit your puppy with a rolled up newspaper and NEVER rub his nose in it!!

This does not teach your puppy about house training. All it does is teach him that humans are scary and unpredictable so when he grows up he will become a fear biter. You do not want a fear biting dog! So please NEVER hit your puppy!

If you catch your puppy having an accident, *calmly* pick him up, carry him outside and put him on the ground. When he goes outside praise him lavishly. Yea, I said lavishly.

Clean up the pee spot with a pet stain and odor remover product. Wash the spot a few times to make sure no scent is left.

Instead of waiting for your puppy to make mistakes and then scolding him, you should show him what you want him to do in the first place. He will learn much faster that way.

Take the puppy out two or three times an hour and say "go potty". Then when he does, give him a treat immediately and praise him.
Also, crate training helps- when you are gone, crate the puppy (buy a big enough crate from the pet store) because dogs will not potty where they have to sleep or lay.
Also, take the dog outside 15 minutes after he eats because this makes him have a bowel movements to make room from the food he just ate.

Also, when you crate train him. Never put him in the crate as punishment because it is supposed to be his "home" or "bed" and he should not think of it as punishment.

Crate training. The idea is that the dog won't mess where they sleep. You take the dog out VERY OFTEN (like every hour or so). No playing when you first take it out of the crate. Take it to the spot where you want it to do it's business and use the same word each time. Once he does go to the bathroom praise him like crazy. Then it's ok to play a little. You take him out upon awakening, at hour intervals throughout as well as 20-45 minutes after eating, after playing and before bed. Once he gets the hang of things and gets a little older you can bump up the time between outtings.

Leave them outside for a while and get them used to going outside.

Take them outside whenever they start trying to go inside.

Put the little pads (forgot the name) down around the house and they will sniff that and go on it, then gradually move it towards the outside and they will get used to going outside, then remove the pad.
