I had throid cancer about 3 yrs ago and it depends on the type of surgeon, the hospital and how long in the hospital your dad would be there. I was in the hospital for eight days due to complications therefore my bill was several thousand dollars. Now as for the cost of the medication. it depends on what type they put him on after wards. I take Synthroid and it costs around 100$ a month to take the dosage I have. If the doctor is removing his thyroid they may also want to do I135 treatments, which is a form a radiation treatment that is done after the removal of the thyroid so that they can make sure the cancer is completely gone. He will also need to undergo routine exams for the next five years to keep a watch on the him and make sure he is doing well. I hope all goes well for you and your father. If either of you have any question please feel free to email me.

I am so sorry to hear that. I had a thyroid biopsy about 2 weeks ago and have a tumor but they are still unsure about whether or not it is cancerous. The cost is going to depend on where you have the procedure done by what doctor and insurance company your dad has. Hopefully your insurance should pay for most of the cost but it depends on whether or not you have met your deductables. My hysterectomy in May was 30,000 and we only paid 500 out of pocket and my insurace covered the rest 100 percent. As far as the medicine my insurance makes it so I pay 10 for generic rx and 20 for brand name. Talk to the doctor and talk your insurace company. It seems that you are worried about the financial aspect but there are ways to work around that. But your fathers health should be of upmost importance. Good luck and God bless.

It can get very expensive. My husband had oropharyngeal cancer this year. Even with good insurance, we spent about $4,000 on medicine, parking, feeding supplies (feeding tube), etc...

If your dad has insurance, your best bet is to contact them to see what and how much is covered. I encourage you to get all the info you can from the web and his doctors. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and question what is necessary.

If he doesn't have insurance, apply for medicaid. He will probably be out of work, as well, for awhile since treatment is hell. Don't forget to look at all insurance policies. Credit Cards, vehicles, etc... will sometimes have policies that allow you not to pay for however long he is out of work.

Also, talk to your friends and family for help. You will need more than just monetary help. All the things your dad and mom take care of will have to be done with help. A lot of time is spent at doctors offices, and chemo is a *****.

Below are some of the best websites I have found for information.

Good Luck!!!!

there is only one kind of thyroid cancer that is bad but it is bad, I had thyroid cancer had half of my throid out in 1987, But make sure you know what kind it is. my dr. told me even if I never had it out, I would have lived at least another 20 years as most thyroid cancer is low key, but there are a couple of bad ones. Pills are very cheap but stay away from generic

I'm so sorry you have to ask this question.

I have thyoid problems, too, but I can't answer your question.

The answer will vary greatly depending on where you live, the severity of your father's condition, etc.

He needs to talk with his doctors. Get second opinion(s), go to the state health dept for monetary help if needed.

I wish you all the best.

Splenda and other artificial sweeteners thrash your thyroid. See the science at http://www.dorway.com because you can get all the surgeries and pills you need to try and get it cut out or stopped for the time being, but if you keep up habits that thrash the thyroid, then you are not getting at the cause of the problem.

There are so many other things out there, too... But, ask your doctor and get a second opinion to get a well rounded answer because diagnostic mistakes happen all the time.
