They're not too hard to make - at least not labor intensive anyway (just a few rules - lol! ). Its best to use eggs that are a few days old - grocery store eggs are fine. Best to use a glass or stainless bowl to whip them as plastic can contain traces of fat which will inhibit the foaming or volume. If you have a stand mixer, such as a Kitchen-Aid it will be easier. It is absolutely imperative that no yolk at all is in the whites when you start to beat them. Also, a ratio of at least 2 Tbsp of superfine sugar per egg white is best, but don't add the sugar (or any other flavor) until the whites are at the glossy, peaked stage. I like to add a drop of vanilla at the end.

Hope this helps!

If you are looking for a topping for pie, then I think your first answerer did give the recipe. There are cookies out there that are DELISH and call meringue cookies, forgotten cookies, surprise cookies, all of them are the same -- and here is that recipe for those!

Meringue Cookies

"This recipe can be doubled, but if you do, don't double the chocolate chips. Best if eaten in a few days."

Original recipe yield:
2 dozen

INGREDIENTS
2 egg whites
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup white sugar
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). To prevent burning you can bake on an air cushion baking sheet or put parchment paper on a regular cookie sheet.
Beat egg whites, salt and cream of tartar until very firm. Gradually add sugar and mix. Fold in vanilla chocolate chips.
Drop by teaspoonfuls on pan. Bake 300 degrees for 25 minutes. They should only be lightly browned.

BTW: if you are looking for a good pie topping recipe or additional ones, just go to yahoo questions and put in meringue recipes and you will find some already here for you.

Make sure all your utensils are clean, separate your eggs, be sure no yolk gets in by mistake. Whip the whites until they stand in peaks, then add sugar to taste. No more beating after sugar is added or your meriange will be a flop.
