I have heard from sources that Portuguese is the hardest romance language to learn. From other I have heard that Portuguese is as easy to learn as Spanish. For the most part, how does Portuguese compare in difficulty to French, Spanish, etc? Pronunciation? Grammar? Vocabulary?

In my opinion while Portuguese isn't quite as tough as French it's not quite as easy as Spanish or Italian either. In the beginning the hardest part about Portuguese is learning all of the different sounds that letters can make in the language. Take the letter "R" for example. If it's at the beginning of the words it's pronounced like an "H" if it's in the middle of a word and followed by a vowel it sounds like a "D" if it's in the middle of a word and followed by a consonant or at the very end of a word it's often silent. There's a lot of little rules of pronunciation like that that exist in the language. Spanish and Italian on the other hand are more so phonetic, so once you learned the pronunciation of the letters they will pretty much always have that same pronunciation. Another aspect that makes Portuguese challenging is the fact that there are two significantly different dialects which exist. While accents and dialects exist in Spanish, French and Italian as well the differences between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are far greater. Some people would even say that they are differnt languages. Well, I don't think I'd go that far but if one truly wants to be fluent in the langauge it would help to completely master one variant and AT LEAST learn the basics of the other variant. A lot of times words will have completely differnt meanings from one country to the other and this can cause some pretty embarrassing situations. Overall, the Portuguese language is an absolutely amazing one. I've been studying Portuguese on my own now for about 8 months and think it's amazing. If you want to learn a language don't ever let difficulty scare you off. If you're determined, you'll learn it. I'd say I'm already half fluent in the language. Hope this helps you.
Boa sorte (Good luck)

I'm a native English speaker who speaks French and Spanish fluently, and I've also studied a little Portuguese.

Since French was my second language, I found Spanish extraordinarily easy, since the grammar and syntax is almost the same, whereas the pronunciation of Spanish is very, very simplistic. Each of the 5 vowels only has one sound that never varies.

I found Portuguese to be very similar to Spanish, except in pronunciation, where it is somewhat more difficult. If you speak any of the three langauges, you will find many similarities when you study Portuguese.

I personally feel French is harder to learn, because of the great variety of vowel sounds, and the particular difficulty for English speakers with the French "r." I am basing my opinion NOT on how difficult it was for me, because I was very young and found it fascinating to learn, but rather on my experience with later learning Spanish, which was so easy after four years of French.

So there are two different types of what we call "Portuguese", "Brazilian Portuguese" and "European Portuguese", often called only "Portuguese".
Portuguese has many variaties of words having really, really tons of synonyms and it has so many verbs.
It is a complex language that is hard to learn but it isn't has hard as French ( i'm currently studying it).
My opinion is if u really try hard to learn it , u will do it, it's a very elegant language to speak, when spoke well.
Here is the "To be" in the indicatif present verb; in European Portuguese:

Eu sou
Tu és
Ele/Ela é
Nós somos
Vós sois
Eles/Elas são

Good luck!

These days you can learn how to speak Spanish over the internet. Check out this online course, it's voted as the best Spanish online course of all time: http://www.rocketlearner.com/spanish The course is very easy to follow, I was able to learn Spanish in just 3 months.

I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a Spanish language teacher but that would have cost me over $800 per month. Good thing with this internet, $800 it's a lot of money for me.
