I'm in a dilemma. My wife wants a 4WD vehicle so that she will have confidence in driving through snow this coming winter. Will getting snow tires for her sedan be a wise alternative (besides being more cheaper)?

Buy the tires.
The increased confidence of 4 wheel drive leads to accidents. People tend to drive as fast as they can. 4 wheel drive does not increase stopping power. This is where many make their mistake. In poor conditions it takes much longer to stop, how many wheels are driving makes no difference.

The only thing 4WD will do is get you further into trouble before you get stuck! It gives people false confidence that they can get through conditions they are not really prepared for.

I have lived in snow country most of my life, from Alaska to Wyoming to the Dakotas and northern Michigan. Most of the problems people encounter while driving in the winter are not with snow, but with ice. I have found the best vehicle for daily winter driving is a front-wheel drive sedan with some good quality winter traction tires on all four wheels. If studded tires are allowed in your part of the country, you should definitely consider getting them. The studded tires will give you much better steering and braking control while driving on ice..

Get snow tires for her sedan. They'll do fine in the snow. You really don't need 4wd only to drive in snow.

snow tires would almost be better because with 4x4, people get over confident and think they can go anywhere when in reality..... they cant. get the snow tires so she stays on her toes, it doesnt matter what vehicle you have, snow makes anything lose traction.

if you do go with all wheel drive or 4x4, look at subaru. yeah, its foreign, but they are very reliable and have outstanding all wheel drive systems.

You might be okay if her sedan is front wheel drive, but only if its a light snow, anything more than that and you will need 4wd.

Cant beat a 4 wd, but if you go for snow tyres, be aware that they are unsafe on sealed roads when they are 50 % or more worn! So use them on snow , and change them when snow is gone.....U may loose traction on tarseal otherwise and crash.

4wd only helps u to get going in the snow.......they dont provide extra stopping power. 4x4 newbies find the out the hard way.

We have a all wheel drive SUV, and it is great in the snow, you might want to think about something like that.

snow tires and alittle weight in the back of car would do just fine,,4x4s are nice to have if you have to go long distance or have to drive in back roads to work ,,,and you know the back roads never get plowed good luck
