I know that there is a background check and 3 day waiting period to buy guns, but do I need to have any special license or permit to buy or own a rifle or handgun in Idaho? I'm 21 and don't plan on carrying a handgun as a concealed weapon, so I know I don't need a concealed weapons permit.

Hey, Jamaitian_♥...Guns aren't evil, people are evil. Shooting targets and soda cans isn't evil the last time I checked. Besides, I didn't ask for your political opinion. It's my constitutional right as an american to own a gun.

How about Cash!
Below is a link summarizing Idaho gun laws
There is a federal background check, but this usually is back within 10 minutes. There is no 3 day waiting period, this information is not correct.
Please read this yourself and then your friendly gun shop can fix you up with what you want.
Be safe and happy shooting!

whats a 3 day waiting period? just kidding i have lived i Idaho my whole life and i have found that this state is the most relaxed about gun rights. there is a back groundcheck but it isn't that long. i can usually go into a gun store and wind up owning a gun in less than 15mins.

People are evil; not guns, not cars, not pickups, not refrigerators, yada. A metal object only does what its owner dictates; as anybody with half a brain knows. In Idaho you only need take your money, checkbook, or plastic card. It is just like the rest of the world; in god we trust but all others pay cash.

Technically, even if your friend bought the gun, you would still be the owner. It's illegal for you to have a gun in your possession if you're under 18 in Idaho. You would have to use a parent's gun under their supervision and you could not have it in your possession without one of them present. In my opinion, it's not worth the risk to have your friend buy you a gun for you to illegally store until you're old enough to buy your own gun... especially a handgun. Rules are even stricter for handguns than for rifles.

Jammie how is a gun evil? It is not a living breathing thing, now the person behind a gun, they are what is evil. Material objects cannot be evil.
