I have no idea what this means but my friend had it written down and I'm curious what it means.

It means 'to shut the big mouth'. If you want to tell somebody to shut up, you have to conjugate 'fermer':

fermer = to shut

Ferme la grande bouche! = Shut your big mouth!

Your friend can't be a native speaker of French, unless there's something you haven't told us. Sure, «Fermer la grande bouche» means literally 'To close the big mouth', but to tell someone to 'Shut up', which is willfully rude, we don't go half-way, we use the word «gueule», which means the mouth of an animal like a dog or a cat, never «bouche» (!!) So we would say, e.g., «Ferme ta gueule!» ('Shut your yap!'), «Ferme ta grande gueule!» ('Shut your big yap!'), or just «Ta gueule!» ('Your yap!'), or even «Ferme-la!» ('Shut it!').

Is your friend an elderly nun?

Your friend literally wrote: "to close the big mouth" but also "to close the big inlet / outlet / gully / outfall" ... etc. etc. etc.

If there is, as I suspect, no relation to what was written and a construction site or a plant, the correct sentence should have been: "ferme ta grande bouche" (fam.), or "fermez votre grande bouche" (form.).

In that case, indeed, it would have meant "shut your big mouth", as many suggested.
