You should go to the Lion King if you can get tickets. It's an incredible experience. I've seen it 4 times! Also Les Miserables (just reopened), Phantom of the Opera...those have been popular for years.
Go to Central Park for sure. Central Park Zoo is fun. On the same day you could also go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met), which is free. Be SURE to see the Egyptian part
If you go in the winter, go to Rockefeller Center and go ice skating. You can also go to the top of the NBC building--called "Top of the Rock." The Rainbow Room is a really fancy restaurant on the top that's supposed to be great. Radio City Music Hall is right there too.
There's the Empire State Building, but all that really is is a nice view...
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as a day trip is SO fun. I really recommend that.
Go to 5th Ave or Madison Ave for high-end shopping/browsing. You should defiitely go to Bergdorf Goodman and Bendel's for shopping too.
And for some funky culture...go downtown to Soho.
HAVE FUN! It's dirty, loud, and crowded, but it's the best city in the world.
