The very best pizza in NY is Sal and Carmines, between 101st and 102nd Street and Broadway. Eat in or out but no delivery.
At lunchtime for cheap Spanish style food (fabulous pork, rice and beans. $4 for small. $7 for large, big enough for two people) from the deli between 87th and 88th Street on Columbus Avenue.
At any time of day (open 11.30 a.m. to 4a.m.) The Dive Bar on 96th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. A fabulous selection of beers, wines, scotch with great food. Juicy burgers, wonderful homemade soups & the best wings. Excellent daily specials too.
Don't miss Zabars , 80th and Broadway. If you're on a tight budget you can go in and just inhale and feel full, but if you've got $4 buy a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel.

Grey's Papaya on 6th Avenue and 8th Street for delicious hot dogs and a tropical flavored drink. All for 2.50 (ask for the recession special)
Nearby is Magnolia Bakery for the world famous cornbread cupcakes and the creamy and colorful frosting. Thats on Bleeker street.
Pomodoro in Soho (mulberry st and Spring st) has delicious pizza slices and a really good chicken parm sandwich. They're famous for their Vodka Slice.
Oh this is a really hot tip. On the corner of 6th avenue and 53rd street (just down the street from MoMA and across from the Hilton) is this Hilal vendor. Every night people line up down the street for their really filling and savory pita, rice and spicy chicken, lamb or beef combo plates. They also make gyros. It's seriously crazy when you see it for the first time.
Near by is Connolly's, on 54th in between 6th and 5th. They are a really friendly and authentic irish pub with some of the friendliest irish bar tenders in the world. After one or two rounds the next is always on them if you chat them up a bit.
I also like the Holiday Cocktail loung on St Marks Place in between (i think) 1st and ave A. It's a dive bar and the decor is depressing and the drinks are cheap and not full of flare. But it's just nice at the same time.
And there is also good Cuban food at Habana cafe on the corner of Elizabeth street and Prince street in Nolita. They are usually crowded but it should be fine.
There are these crazy indian food restaurants that are insanely cheap located on 1st avenue and 5th street. The waiters stand outside and try to get you to go into their restaurant (they are 4 or 5 located next or on top of each other) The one Upstairs and on the right is the coolest one. The entire ceiling is covered with red hot chili pepper christmas lights leaving EVERYTHING in a weird red glow.
And one last one. Good thai and such kind of food is served at SEA on 2nd avenue in between 4th and 5th (or 5th and 6th).
bon apetite
