As a Christian, I have realized that forgiveness involves repentance. In other words, it isn't enough to ask Christ for forgiveness if I make absolutely no effort to stop comitting sin. The goal is to stop sinning; forgiveness gives us the hope we need to keep struggling. The real victory occurs when we stop hurting ourselves and others and stop offending the eternal majesty of God. Is it possible for us to stop sinning completely in this life? Maybe not, but every sin defeated makes this world a slightly better place.
