I adore music and appreciate all styles and taste. What do you think about this? If you listen to more nonchristian music then probably your over doing it? just limit your intake i guess? let me know yea?

Even as a Christian, I have never cared for music that is marketed as "Christian." It just doesn't seem authentic. Much of it sounds contrived, as if to make sure some lesson is given. The articulation of words is annoyingly precise, so as to make sure the message is given. And so forth.

I also don't like to draw categories such as Christian and secular, as if all cultural products can be neatly placed in one or the either.

This is a great question considering I went through the same thing. I used to listen to 2Pac, Nas, Kanye West, etc., but then my views changed and I refuse to listen to secular music. The thing is, most rap and R&B (and other genres as well) is extremely sinful and all about sex, drugs, violence, money, etc.

Feed your soul with Godly music because if you listen to the secular stuff, it'll change you in a bad way. There's so much good Christian music out there including Christian rap and Christian contemporarym Try Lecrae, Flame, Cross Movement, Trip Lee, Tedashii, Michael W. Smith, Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, etc. Christian music is the kind of music that really praises God and helps you grow in your faith.

I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

Outside of really old Christian music, like hymns and such (I LIVE for Handel's Messiah!), I find Christian music to be for the most part a ginormous suckfest. I know those words are strong but in all honesty are we honoring God when we offer Him up mediocre art? (Or literature? Or movies?)? And more than any other art form, modern Christian music is pretty much aggressively mediocre in my opinion. If given a choice between listening to something that isn't by a Christian artist but is superlative, artistically speaking, and listening to some hokey Christian chorus about what praise music various cartoon characters would make (do you guys know that song? Aaaaargh!), I'll choose the non-Christian music all day. It makes me feel far more worshipful.

Signed,

your inveterable music snob

I don't think the music U listen too has anything to do with religion. I too love all sorts of music but I never thought about whether it was Christian or not. I think that if it makes U feel good than what's the harm, yea?

It's the only music I'll listen to. I can't stand Christian music.

I like music that has a realistic message, makes you think, shares your feelings, and has a good sound; not music that says the same tired thing verse after verse.

Try Bad Religion, Social Distortion and Skinny Puppy for a real eye-opener.

I think its okay if you make sure that the lyrics don't defile God and what he stands for.

I had to throw away some of my records in my collection because of the contents of the lyrics. Others I felt were okay to keep. An example would be Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head.

I agree that the styles and type of music are okay to enjoy. If you are a Christian, I think you will know what you should or should not listen to by the prodding of Holy Spirit. That is who I depend on to show me.

I disagree, I am a Christian and I prefer non-Christian music. In a lot of cases, the Christian musicians are just as fame and money hungry as any other band. In my opinion.

I tend to listen to non-Christian music, and I like it that way.

I can spot contemporary Christian music within a few words and cords. Doesn't have to say anything religious - it just all has a sound and lyrics that are characteristic and homogeneous. Some gospel and "religious" bluegrass I like, but contemporary Christian fare is unimaginative, single-minded pap.

No where in the Bible does it say we can't listen to any given style of music and appreciate it.

God loves all types of music, but not all lyrics. If the lyrics are clearly against God- swearing, sexual references, etc. then Christians should not listen to those songs. But there is nothing wrong with many of the artists who sing about their expirience, love, and friendship.
