Probes are known for transmission problems! Because of the history, I will not even consider buying one with an automatic transmission, and if I have to take one in trade, I trailer it (rather than risk driving it) to the auction and sell it!
I would look for another car.

Well, I dont think you should buy a Probe, but if the car is in great condition as well as the motor and the transmission, I'll say you should go for it, but make sure that the car doesn't smoke, because domestic cars like to smoke around 100K miles. This car has low mileage for the year, but if you dont feel good and comfortable when you drive it, you should not buy it. I dont know very much about this cars, but the ones that i have seen on the streets are very nice, but over all this car has 4 cylinder and not a 6. The ford 4 cylinder of the 90's wasn;t very good and thay tended to wear out fast. if you want to buy and old car as a first car i think that you will be able to find a good honda accord or civic for a little more money, these cars will go forever and dont like to give up.

First and foremost, there's no such thing as a '93 GT with a 4-cylinder, it's a V6, so if it's a 4 cylinder it's either a SE or a base model. And you should be able to talk down that price, especially if it is a 4cyl. That being said, if it hasn't been beat on it should make an alright car for the money... Probes did have auto tranny issues but they're far more prevelant in 4-cyl models. They do have issues with axles as well, so you may want to ask if those have been replaced. Engine parts can be pretty pricey, but such is the case with any car nowadays. Basically, if you or someone you know is relatively handy working on a car it should be alright, but it is an old car, so expect to have to do some repairs at some point. I've owned 3 probes and have had alright luck with them, no more repairs than I'd expect. Here's a list of what I can think of as "common" problems with the probe and things you should check out if you consider it.
-Distributors, the ignitor to be more specific, moreso on the V6
-Rear sway bar endlinks
-Lifter ticks
-CV joint/axle problems
-4cyl automatic tranny issues
-VRIS selenoids sticking open/closed on V6
-Valve cover gasket leaks
Think that's about it, off the top of my head at least... They're super fun cars though!!!!!!!!!!

The Probes have been known for problems in the past such as the tranny problem that someone else mentioned. But alltogether the Ford Probe is a pretty decent 1st car. With 108K miles on the engine, it really depends on how well the previous owner maintained it, and how well you do if you buy it. If the other owner drove it very hard and didn't take car of it, it could be a bad buy, but if he stayed up on maintenance, and didn't beat on the engine, I would say go for it. Especially if you are only looking for a car to last you a couple years. If you can find a Probe with under 100k miles that would be even better.

It depends on the car. Have the car inspected by a good mechanic. Maintenance and driving style both contribute to how reliable a car will be. If the car wasn't maintained and was driven aggressively it doesn't matter how good a car was to begin with. For what it's worth, my roommate has an 89 probe that has been a great car. It has 220k on the odometer.

Caution, they also had axle shaft & front hub assembly problems. Probes are problematic cars & getting parts for them can also be a problem.
I don't hear wonderful things about this model. Look elsewhere.
