When I was going through this a few years ago I was told to do some walking. Endorphins that are released when you exercise is the best way to treat depression without medication. I can only say from experience that it worked. I only went for a half an hour walk everyday and in no time I was feeling much better.

When depression hits, find something to do, eaither art, playing music, (happy Loud music). If water (lake, pond, stream) is easy to get to, go there, and listen to nature. It will give a calming affect, to slow you down on your thoughts.
I have fought depression since I was 13, I'm now 54, and no meds. I always think of the ones around me, and how much they mean to me, if the killing myself thoughts, try to sneak in. I think of my Husband, and kids, Sisters, Brothers and so on. What would happen if I was gone. Wasn't pretty. I would bring more misery than it was worth.
So I decide I won't give up.
Find what is important to you, and keep it very close to your heart, when depression starts, so do your thoughts of that something special.
