Long Beach is great. But... the town literally varies from block to block. There are some radical gang neighborhoods where the Chicanos, Blacks and Vietnamese are fighting it out. but... there are really nice areas like Down Town, Belmont Shore and the Beach front areas that are upscale and great. I am not sure where the Devry school is but there is nothing that is not a 15 minute drive away in LB so no worries. Make sure you check out the neighborhood that you are going to live in during the early evening hours. This is when it is easiest to figure out what the demographics of the neighborhood is because everyone is usually out and about. The Queen Mary and the harbor area are always fun and the bar scene in Belmont Shore is great. Long Beach is also in close proximity to the Orange county beach cities and the LA nightlife. You'll have a ball but don't have to much fun and blow your studies. Good luck

Devry is close to the Long Beach Airport so it's in a decent neighborhood. Most of the homes were built in the boom after WWII so they all kinda look the same to me.
Long Beach itself is billed as the most diverse city in the nation. We have everything from Cambodian gang bangers, drag queens and rich people that live in multi-million dollar homes on the coast.
Belmont Shore & Heights, Pine Street, East Village Arts District and Bluff Park all have some cool bars (for when you are old enough to drink) and restaurants. 4th Street has a couple of cool coffee shops that the sober or the too young to drink like to hang out in. I'm not a fan of Shoreline Village because it looks too touristy, but it's neat to see the first couple of times. People are friendlier the closer to the water you live. We have more of a beach town mentality. People that live inland can seem a bit more high-strung.
Naples is also a nice area. They have canals and you can ride a gondola through them.
Stay out of North Long Beach, some parts are pretty sketchy.

There are two areas of LGB. One is white and rich, the other is largely non-white and poorer. There are some gangs. Snoop Dogg is from Long Beach and has spoken of his gang affiliations and days selling drugs. The city itself has a long beach (!!!) and is on the ocean so it is improving greatly economically as other areas become even more pricey.

Buy property if you can. Most of the city is very nice and it is a great base location for points north (Los Angeles) and south
(very wealthy Orange County). It is a great place to live. They have a downtown area that is develping with a nice aquarium and a park, open air market, etc although it is still somewhat run down.

The areas along the shore line are quite affluent. Inland much less affluent...

No offence to those who live there, but no way Jose! I'd go for Bellfower or Downey area and spend the few extra bucks in gas to commute. It's not that far away.
