For the presidential inauguration, the supreme court and the congress are there, as well as invited guests... the incoming president is given the oath of office. the Oath is repeated, and after that the president is officially in office. After that, the president usually gives an inaugural address.

People present include the outgoing President and Vice President and the incoming President and Vice President. The Chief Justice of the United States is also there to swear in the new President and Vice President, using the language contained in Article II of the U.S. Constitution. The first President, George Washington, added the phrase "so help me God" to the oath and every one of his succesors has followed suit.
The remainder of the inauguration includes a religious invocation and there might be other selected speakers as well. In the case of JFK, the poet Robert Frost read a poem.
Following the swearing in the new President will address those gathered for the ceremony. Following the ceremony and the parade which follows, the new President and his family traditionally go to the residential portion of the White House for dinner, prior to attending all of the inaugural balls and parties throughout the District of Columbia.
