That's ridiculous. I was asked the same question by a woman behind me. I don't remember what I said, but yes, you can only hold a spot in front of you, and the person behind you shouldn't have asked such an inane question. What would you say to another person who got in line behind you? Uh, That spot is taken??? And can you imagine their response?
You are telling them they can't get in line because someone behind you chose to get out of the line. Gee that's real bright.

Do not save spots. The person who she should have asked was the person behind her, not the one in front of her.

You can hold the spot for her in front of you. When your turn comes, you pay and you are off if she doesn't show up by then. After you are done, you are no longer responsible for her.

I've done that before......I just turn around and tell the person who is now behind me that I'm holding that spot for someone.

No one has ever gotten upset......if they did I would just drop it....I did what I could.
