Here's the recipe we've made for years. Until people got weird with putting things in Halloween treats, we would give these out to the "Ghosts and Goblins" that came to our door. Then we had to stop, because if the parents didn't know us, they would make their kids throw them away! But our neighbor kids still enjoyed them. We even had to make them for the college kids when they'd be home at Thanksgiving time! Your question might cause me to have to make some and ship them to the "kids" and their kids this fall.

Old-Time Popcorn Balls

20 cups popped popcorn (about 1 cup unpopped)
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla

Remove all unpopped kernels from popped corn. Put popcorn in a large roasting pan; keep warm in a 300 F oven.

Butter sides of a 2 quart saucepan. In it combine sugar, water, corn syrup, vinegar and salt. Cook to 270 degrees (soft-crack stage), stirring frequently (mixture should boil gently over entire surface). Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Slowly pour mixture over hot popcorn. Stir just until mixed. Butter hands; using buttered cup or large spoon, scoop up popcorn mixture. Shape with buttered hands into 2 1/2 to 3 inch balls. Makes 13 to 15 popcorn balls.

Work quickly and rebutter your hands for each ball. Place on waxed paper. When done forming all balls, wrap each in plastic wrap to keep fresh. Don't forget this syrup is HOT and will burn your skin. But they are sooo good!

INGREDIENTS:
1/4 cup corn oil
1/2 cup popcorn
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
PREPARATION:

Heat corn oil in a 4-quart kettle over medium heat for about 3 minutes. Add popcorn. Cover, leaving cover just slightly ajar. Shake frequently over medium heat until popping stops. Meanwhile, mix together corn syrup, sugar and salt.

Add to popped corn in kettle, stirring and tossing constantly over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, or until sugar is dissolve and popcorn is evenly coated with mixture. Remove from heat. Gently form into balls, using buttered hands.
Makes about 1 dozen popcorn balls.

You pop the corn first then while it's hot you add in some cream marshmallow and form the balls. If you want caramel get the carmel squares and melt them down first and add them instead of the marshamallow. You can also add roasted peanuts.
