Apply for a Australia Tax file online or when you get here.
If you download this form direct http://ato.gov.au/content/downloads/tfn_applicationform.pdf it will tell you everything you need.

NZ IRD numbers do NOT work here.

I don't know about visas etc but as far as places to work. The Stanthorpe (also known as the Granite Belt) area is a good place if you are happy to do fruit or vegetable work. Lots of different farms. Also it is only a 3 hour bus trip to Brisbane and similar distance to Byron Bay just over the border into NSW. Lots of Backpackers from all over the world are here too between Dec and Feb. Have fun.

you wont be able to get an australian tax number if you are not an australian citizen, you will need to apply for a work visa and everything like that, contact the australian embassy in new zealand and they will help you out

You do NOT require a visa to work in Australia if you are a kiwi.

You will require a tax file number as you will be a tax resident of Australia.

You will need to apply for this once you arrive, it only takes a very short while for you to get it.
