Probably started when they had king like powers, and abused them like any other mortal human being did in the times, so the popes wanted the plebs to show absolute loyalty.

I don't kiss or even say Hello ! can you imagine how many ppl's lips have touched that? herpes simplex(cold sore virus) here we come!
