By kissing the ring, the faithful are demonstrating respect for the office, not the man. The same custom is used with Cardinals and Bishops as well.

Probably started when they had king like powers, and abused them like any other mortal human being did in the times, so the popes wanted the plebs to show absolute loyalty.

I don't kiss or even say Hello ! can you imagine how many ppl's lips have touched that? herpes simplex(cold sore virus) here we come!

I don't! but I'm guessing you do and if you don't know why you do it then you have to ask yourself why would you do something not knowing the reason or purpose for it.
