As a corrections officer, every two years we have to get recertified and that means getting sprayed with Phase 3 OC Pepper Spray again, along with tear gas. The gas is not as bad as the OC obviously. Someone was telling me of different ways to get rid of the pain, like dawn dish soap, milk, and shaving cream. Someone else said there was a solution you can buy. Any ideas?

Thanks guys. For some reason I couldn't think of that word "decontaminate" nevertheless, I found a few different types of decontaminates. Heres a link to all of them

Sudecon Decontaminant Wipes.
You wipe your face with one, and then squeeze a second one into your eyes. It works very well.

This is the manufacturers site:

Pepper Spray Relief

Military here and not law enforcement but it is all the same as I have seen people try everything. 99% of the "remedies" are all bull.

Water right away (or any liquid) only serves to spread the stuff around even further. No you stand outside in a breeze (w.you arms out) or if you have to run around a bit until the immediate burn is managable. You can open your eyes, snot is not running out of your nose, etc.

THEN you use a grease cutter like dawn but don't use too much (it can make it worse) and be gentle. At that point a dairy product can be helpful as it can neutralize some of the pepper component. This is capsicum and if one eats a pepper water makes it worse but dairy counteracts it. Milk is a bit weak with less butter fat so think half and half. I tried sour cream once and though it felt so so good I smelled like beef stroganoff the next day.

I have seen guys use a baking soda solution or paste. But don't rub though. Some swear by Alka Seltzer. I suppose the antiacid theory is sound....... think bee stings or poison ivy. Calamine lotion for that matter would obviously help.

Later at home I have found that Oil of Olay is great with a breeze and is soothing. Once it was really bothering me an my wife laughed because I was sitting with that on my face in front of a fan. A doctor told me that one. And lastly if you do further washings or when showering the next day use a really neutral soap like Ivory. Nothing with perfume or anti perspirents. Shaving cream is out........ unless the tactic is to intensify the pain to a level where it hurts so bad and your face is so numb that anything feels good after that!

All in all its like I said before...... the products that you can buy are a ripoff. They might make you feel OK right then but can make it worse later because they can be harsh. Some swear by them but everybodies skin is different.

They make wet wipe type of things that deactivate OC spray. I'm sorry but I can't tell you what it's called. My agency gives us them to use to decontaminate people we have sprayed. I don't think it works any better than Dawn dish soap and good ventilation.. and time.

It is a chemical burn and hurts for a while.

Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo. Sounds strange but it is a simple concept. It is 'no more tears' (not an eye irritant) and breaks down oils in OC spray. Mace is particulate matter and copious amount of clean water, continously flushin the particles, is your best bet.

The commerical products that are supposed to neutralize the OC effects are a bunch of bunk (in my opinion). Cool water, grease cutting detegetn (like Dawn), and fresh air are best. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes for the effects to wear off and that's that. The only thing those commercial products reduce the effects of is your disposable income.

I have to go through the same thing every couple of years. We use a solution of equal parts of baby shampoo (specifically No More Tears) and water. The baby shampoo is gentle anyway so it won't irritate you further if you spray it in your eyes.

Buy a bottle of saline solution for contact lenses. I wear contacts. Saline solution will reduce the burning sensation more than water. Water isn't like the natural tears that your eyes produce. Water will irritate your eyes, but saline solution will soothe and comfort your eyes.

Ive heard milk for some reason is good lol but ive never tried it. I also happen to know first hand that if you can get away with not shaving(if youre a guy) the day you get sprayed then it effects you a lot less. Ive had it both ways
