My 5 month old puppy had blood in her poop a few days ago, the vet did a fecal exam (it was negative) and advised me to feed her chicken & rice for a while. Well, the blood issue is almost cleared up, but now her poop is very mucusy. Is that a normal result from the chicken & rice. I have a 14 month old which has also been eating it too and now her poop has mucus in it also, hers is a bit firmer. Sorry if this is gross, but I'm just curious...

Chicken + rice is not a nutritionally complete diet for a dog. If you want to do home-cooked meals, then there are tons of recipes on the web and books as well that will be able to help you make a variety of nutritionally complete diets. And don't leave food out. He doesn't need to "graze" between meals and most dogs under that management will become obese and/or lose the bonding relationship that occurs when food comes from YOU and not magically from the floor. Also, do not change his diet suddenly - a sudden change in diet usually results in intestinal upset including diarrhea and/or vomiting. Mix his old food in with his new in greater and greater amounts over the course of 4-5 days if you decide to make a change. Good luck.

My puppy had blood then blood and mucus. She had coccidosis (sp), a parasite. She was on antibiotics for 21 days. She's better now and poops are fine. Have the vet check her out again. My vet did the free float fecal exam and it was neg. they did a smear and saw 2 parasites. Not a lot but I wanted to nip it in the bud before a problem arose. I have a toy breed so I didn't want to take any chances.

Ewww :) Just kidding. It might just be a reaction to the new diet. Sometimes when you drastically change a dog's food it messes with their digestion. I've been told by my vet when I changed the type of dog food I give my dog to gradually do it, give them about an 80%-20% mix, then gradually shifting until they are eating all new food. It will probably get better once their body adjusts to it. If not though, you may want to bring it up to your vet.

What I was told by a Vet that I should mix a little at a tlme in with the regular food and they gradually give them the changed diet and then their stomach will not get bothered by it.

please take her stool in for another worm test that is what it sounds like. I have fed chicken and rice to both dogs and cats and never had that problem unless they had worms
