I was wondering what the effective range was with a Ruger Blackhawk with 7.5in barrel, .45 long colt, for hunting deer. Also if this had a 4x scope on it?

H is right on this one. I have a Blackhawk in 44 magnum that's scoped and I will only risk a 65-70 yard shot maximum. The 45 long colt just doesn't have the power that a 44 mag does so the effective range is a bit shorter. Good gun to hunt Whitetails with at 50 yards of less,if the 45 long colt is legal in your state...An LER 4X scope would work fine for this.....

It depends on how good a shot you are and what load you are using.

If you are using the standard Cowboy load of a 255 gr. lead conical, @ +/- 900 fps, stick to the 50 yards and under that H suggested.

If you are using a more modern load, such as one from Buffalo Bore, or Garrett Cartridge Co, or if you are handloading some high velocity 300+ grain bullets, that is a different colored horse, and is strictly dependent on your shooting skill.

The effective range is whatever range you can reliably put five shots into an 8" paper plate quickly. That might be 35 yards, or it might be 150 yards. I'd strongly urge you not to try a shot on game beyond 150 yards.

For these folks who think the .45 LC is a 50 yard cartridge, I wish they could see Jim Taylor and some of the other Shootists making consistent hits on a steel buffalo target at 950 yards. I can't do it, but a real pistolero can.

Rule of thumb, handguns are 50 yards extreme max. Even a scope won't turn it into a rifle. The carbine though will be effective to about 150 yards although I would keep my shots closer. With the carbine you have at least 16" of barrel, better sight radius and steadier platform.

You can hear tales of 100 yard, even 200 yard kills with handguns but for mortals 50 is the outside limit. There will always be the Thompson Contender guys who make the long shots with rifle caliber handguns, but with a conventional revolver anything longer would be the exception rather than the rule.
