No. I disagree

They bear all of the responsibility, but have very little authority.

no. they have authority sure but they are the ones who keep the crime rates down. if you think cops have too much authority then wait till someone with a gun breaks into your house and you need to call the police. then see if you think they have too much authority.

They are so handicapped by silly laws (search and seizure, or Miranda, for instance) that a lot of their authority has been taken away from them. No, they do not have too much authority. In many ways, they do not have all that they need are are entitled to.
There are too many bad guys walking the street who ought to be doing time.

No, they have exactly the amount of authority that they are given under the law. You elect the lawmakers, they represent your interests and hopefully have provided the correct level of authority based on what works best for you community.

NO. Isn't it our job to have authority? That why we are out there on the streets, to keep you and your family safe. If your home was being burglarized and we can't come because we don't have authority, would you like that? Then you would come on yahoo answers and complain "My home was burglarized and the cops didnt do anything for me!" DAMNED IF WE DO< DAMNED IF WE DON'T!!

I don't think they have too much authority, but they may take advantage of the authority they do have. and it's not like they get the respect they should either.

I read a story in the paper today about some ordinary Chinese people who went to jail for a week because they mocked their govt online. How's that for too much po-po power?

Americans at least have the right to criticize our govt. And there are a lot of people around the world who don't have that right. I suppose the halmark of a free society is one that is allowed to complain. I don't trust the police and they probably don't trust me but at least you're allowed to speak yer mind.

It's bad..but a lot of people have it worse.

I do believe they take it to far at times and then at times they don't do anything to help out. So it all depends on who the cop is and what is really going on. Some cops get called to the same thing over and over and are tired of it, some just don't care. I have not meet to many that actually cared, and i live in the LAPD area ( los angeles) .. Yes i have friends that are cops!!

Too much?

No.

Unless they abuse their power, I say often times they can't act because of the bill of rights. Usually this applies more the child molesters and murderers whereas drug users and dealers often take the bust.

hell yes they do.....the town i live in, parker.....the cops are the most uptight, rude and egotistical people ever, they abuse power and are just flat annoying

they set speed limits in the city for 30mph were you could do atleast 45 and still be safe (not residential either). so they will wait on that road everyday and will pull you over even if you doing 5mph over! i got pulled over for doing 33 in a 30 zone while trying to get to school. managed to get off with a warning, but wtf....

they are a bunch of wimps were i live, they would rather pull people over or go out on a call for fireworks rather then busting a methlab down the street....
