Let me begin by stating my bias. My Grandfather and seven uncles were murdered by the Japanese.
If the Japanese government and the Japanese people had, during the last 60 years, expressed genuine remorse for their actions during the war, admitted their guilt as the instigators of that war, and sought to make amends then I would have forgiven them and would have hoped that the other people's of Asia, including the Chinese, could have found it possible to forgive them.
But the terrible truth is that the Japanese are not remorseful, do not accept responsibility, and have not sought to make amends.
To the contrary, it was only a few years ago that the Japanese government attempted to put textbooks into use that would teach Japanese children that Japan was the innocent victim of American and Chinese aggression and, that Korea had invited the Japanese into their country to preserve order.
They have viciously attacked the few surviving women forced by Japan into sexual slavery, calling them whores who willingly serviced their troops.
High Japanese officials, including the Prime Minister, have persisted in worshipping at a shrine erected to Japanese war criminals, mass murders and rapists, describing these loathsome monsters as heroes and glorious warriors.
The Japanese government has refused to give compensation for their brutality, seeking to hide behind hyper technical legalistic interpretations of certain phrases in the peace treaty that ended the war.
In everything they do the Japanese spit in the collective faces of their victims and demonstrate that the few weak expressions of apology, forced out of them by the just anger and outrage of the world, are insincere.
Contrast this with the actions of their German counterparts
Every post war German political leader has made profuse and repeated apologies for German atrocities. To deny the Holocaust is a crime in Germany. The symbols of the Nazi regime are banned and any political party that advocates any part of the Nazi program can be dissolved. No one has, to my knowledge, attempted to build a shrine to Hitler but if they did it surely be torn down as soon as it was discovered. German school children are taught that the Nazi regime was evil and that Germany behaved monstrously during the war.
Forgiveness can only follow remorse on the part of the miscreant.
In the case of Japan there is no remorse and therefore there is no forgiveness.

Yes, the Chinese still hate the Japanese for not living up to the responsibilities that come from their historical past, mainly from WWII which means predominantly the Nanjing Massacre and the fact that they occupied the Northeast of China and established Manchukuo, a satellite state of Japan with the last emperor Pu Yi as head of state to make it seem more legal. The Japanese have committed countless attrocities against the Chinese during WWII and they have never taken on this responsibility, they haven't even admitted that the Nanjing Massacre, though extremely well documented, has ever happened.
Now what we're talking here is the stance of the Chinese and the Japanese government, not necessarily the stance of your average Chinese person. However, most Chinese people I know hate Japan for exactly the reasons mentioned above because the Chinese government likes to keep it that way for political reasons which means that the Chinese people are required to hate the Japanese. After all it's a tightly controlled country here and this is rather easy to accomplish. Funny enough though the Japanese car industry sees an ever increasing number in sales here in Mainland China, the Chinese don't seem to have a problem with Japanese products but that's because they know it's good quality at reasonable prices. In general, if you let the Chinese think what they want (and that's not yet the case) they'd probably scold the **** out of the Japanese for what they did in WWII but they'd leave all that at the door when it comes to doing business.

Some Chinese hate or dislike Japan, and some don't.
Among those who hate or dislike Japan, most likely they do so because of what Japan did the the past, before WWII, not because of jealousy.
Almost nobody in China thinks that Japan is the best and the most powerful country. Some Chinese think the US is the most powerful, and some think China is the best. This is the same in most countries (either they are the best, or the US).

The older generations who have gone through the China-Japan war, or those who have lost their relatives may still hate Japanese. Most of the younger generations may not hate Japanese, but still keep a distance from them.
I see no reasons why we should hate the younger Japanese who haven't committed war crimes, but we should never forget the history, that tells us a weak or corrupted government will invite foreign countries' invasion.
I don't see Japan the best or most powerful country, but there are many things that Chinese should learn from the Japanese, such as
-self discipline
-dedication to work
-respect to other people
-law abiding

The school syllabus and policies adopted in China and Korea are biased just like the Japanese education policy. Children are fed on history that Japanese military aggression resulted in great injustice in China and Korea. The Chinese history books do not cover the wrong doings of their Chinese leaders under Chairman Mao and others.
Do we see the Chinese populations beyond China, having aggressive reactions toward Japan whenever the Japanese Prime Minister visits the shrine. Unlikely, it's brain washed propaganda.

The question is not appropriate.
Chinese ppl DO NOT hate Japanese. They just hate the fact that Japanese right wing officials refused to apologize for what Jap government had done to China and Chinese civilians. To prevent such tragedy from happening , ppl need to learn from history, not deny it or forget it.
Check out the documentary film(very graphic): The Rape Of Nanking (aka Nanjing)

Watch this youtube video, you will understand where that hatred comes from:

Chinese young generation are being taught what their ancesters have suffered in the past. But they are not told to hate any race. It's as simple as that--west wing government officials forget the history and refuse to apologize; They will be hated by generations of Chinese for sure. But Chinese ppl don't hate the normal Japanese ppl. You can see lots of them living and working in China safely.

For one thing I know there isn't many Japanese investment in Nanjing but there are a lot in Dalian.
I guess both Chinese and Japanese avoid talking about what has happened 60+ years ago if they just wanted to talk about business, trading, making money, etc.
Let the scars just be the scars! History reminds us not to do things wrong again.
Next Tuesday... is 18th September, by the way! I guess, there are not so many young Chinese know what 918 was!
