...yet I have chosen to live a life of atheism, despite the fact I went to sunday school and church, before it was my choice to do so.

I live a life of tolerance towards all religions and races....

...on my deathbed, dying, in pain, I make a plea to "god" to look after me and save me...

...what happens?

You pass into spirit world with your full history of deeds done, both good and bad and you will have a life review and judge yourself. Christians like to believe they only need faith and can avoid taking personal responsibility and ask to be saved and hey presto. But it doesn't work that way as we are all accountable. You don't need to be 'saved' that is just the churchs control at it's finest.

Then He will do just that. However should you be swiftly knocked over by a passing bus and instantly killed then you will not have the luxury of time to have that conversation.
The Christianity of your parents may not suite you. Just because you go to church doesn't make you Christian anymore than paddling in the sea will make you an olympic swimmer. Go and find God yourself away from your parents and forget what you have previously learned and start from scratch. The very fact that you have asked this question proves beyond any doubt you are clearly not an atheist.

Can i give you a text - 2 Peter 3:9 - written by Jesus disciple Peter: The Message version:
"God isn't late with His promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining Himself on account of you - holding back the End because He doesn't want anyone lost or to perish. He's giving everyone space and time to change".
If you have a change of heart - it's god's grace operating in your life. All who call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Hope this is some help to you. You know the Lord God loves you so very much - He longs for you to choose life with Him for eternity - He's given you freedom to choose. : )
God Bless

Too little, too late.

He has said, "Today is the day of salvation". If He comes by again and presents you with His salvation, don't hesitate. Besides, how do you know you will be dying in bed? You could die suddenly without any warning at all. Can you guarantee your last day?

Jesus is not just an avenue to get to Heaven. Getting saved is not mere fire insurance. He also wants us to live this life abundantly and He can give us abundant life. This gives us a chance to live and experience Him on our way off this rock.

Why would you pray to God if you didn't believe he existed? If you do blelieve deep down he exists, would it not be better to live a life that is acceptable to Him now?

No-one on this forum can tell you how God will judge any matter.

A scripture that might help is Matthew 7:21-23. It says: "Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will. Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many powerful works in your name?’ And yet then I will confess to them: I never knew you! Get away from me, you workers of lawlessness."

Even people who are spiritually minded and do good things, such as expelling demons and prophesying, will not necessarily find favour with God. It is the one doing the will of God that's gets His approval.

I believe that God is also merciful and whatever He does is for the best.

I pity you. You have so many answers to choose from all saying the same thing. There is no god. However, since humans aren't all knowing, no one can say for sure if there isn't or is a God. Anyways, as i here from christians, yes you will go to heaven, but, there will be no rewards there for you. You earn your rewards by good works, while being a Christian.

No one is promised to have a deathbed conversion and thus be saved. But if it is granted to you and you pray to God to save you, I know that He will call to you and you can then choose to love him. But dont count on that, you may miss the opportunity. See what Jesus says about the moment of death to st faustina. He calls five times to a soul.

Yeah, but one could quickly die in a car accident or other incident with no opportunity to make a plea to God. Where does that leave you. Life can be short. Play your cards carefully.

If you're an atheist why would you plea to "God" on your deathbed? But I personally beleive that only truly evil people go to hell. I'm Catholic though.

You don't know Him do you?
If you don't know Him how do you expect Him to acknowledge you?
The last minute confession of faith is that real? Or is it a religious insurance policy? Because if you're just covering the bases my man then it is a complete mockery of what God had in mind for you.
He does not want to sign the death warrant of the wicked He said so Himself. What He wants is for all, the righteous and the unrighteous to go to Him. He wants you in His kingdom, not someplace else, and all He asks is for your faith and worship. But He asks.
He will not force it on you, but He will not grant grace to one who mocks His salvation.
