Check with your local shelter. Many of them will microchip your dog for under $50. There is no annual fee.

I have all my litters chipped. It usually costs me about $25 per puppy.

I would think twice before I had a pet chipped. My dog is micro chipped, she's from a shelter, but if I had a choice I would not do it. Yesterday a story broke citing the possibility they can cause cancer. The link below is where I initially heard about it, but there are other news locations with information, on AOL's front page for example. Studies on rats and mice from England, France, Germany and the US, all show similar results. I have a new kitten from a feral cat and when she is spayed I will refuse the option of having her chipped, she's an indoor cat. I will frequently search my pup for any lumps especially at the shoulders for any changes.

They do offer some security of reuniting you if lost, but that to is not a guarantee. Research the same website and you'll read about dogs being euthanized at the pound regardless. There is also the possibility that the scanners used will not be of the same radio-frequency, that too has been an issue.

Some companies do this - shop around, there are many that don't have an annual fee. I paid £10 for chip implant and will only have to pay about £7 extra if I need to change any details with them.

You can usually chip a dog at clinics that are held all over. The initial fee is about $25. Then, you pay a fee to register the chip (with the chip manufacturer is enough) and that's it. No more fees.

At the vet clinic where I work it is $50 for insertion and life time registration with AVID..that's it.No yearly fees..just a single one time insertion & registration fee.

When I did Home Again on my dogs it was $25 for insertion and $12.50 for life time registration.

The only good microchips are Avid or Home Again beware of other chips.

Where did you go?

My dog was chipped for about $40 including the office call, and then a registration fee with HomeAgain that was under $20, and that's a lifetime registration.

I did an Avid microchip on my girl and registered it with 24PetWatch (link below). It only cost me $20 for the chip insertion. Everytime I update the information it costs me $6, but to me that is minimal. What type of chip are you having put in? Maybe they were confused as to what you were asking for??

I don't know where you live but in Canada that would be nonsense. The implant is relatively cheap, about $70 Cdn and there are no further charges.
