If this is a new behavior, you should find out if he/she is eating sweets at school. If school is new it could just be excitement.

I as well have a 5 yr old that is hyper after school. I agree with a couple of the answers that have already been posted. Let he/she run around a play for a little while when they get home. My 5 and 8 yr olds are terrible when they get home. So I give them a snack and let them unwind from the day before trying to attack homework or anything like that. If you take them for a ride in the car you may find they might benefit from a little nap. My kids arrive home at 3:30 and we leave to pick up my husband at 4:15 and they are asleep almost everyday, and are fine when we return home. Good luck!

Recognize that school is extremely stressful for some kids, particularly as Kindergarten and First Grade have turned into boot camp. The kids have to hold it together all day without enough time to run, relax and play so it is natural that they let loose when they get home. Unlike adults they don't even have a lunch hour that is under their own control. Try to give him time to do whatever he wants, preferably outside, as long as he isn't hurting others or endangering himself or your home. Let him vegetate in front of the TV if that calms him. Encourage him to talk about his day but don't be surprised if he won't. Give him a healthy snack. If he has homework let it wait until he has let off steam. The situation will probably get better as the year progresses but remember that he is a child, not a miniature adult

This is just a hunch, but maybe he/she has some pent up energy from sitting still/paying attention for extended periods. How about running around at the park or school playground for a half hour before coming home?

Do not let him eat sugar snacks when he gets in from school. Give him some yogurt, something healthy to snack on. My grandson likes plain cherrios with no milk to eat as an afterschool snack until dinner is ready. If he grabs something sweet before I stop him, he is "wound up" all evening.

Check and find out what he/she is eating at school. Too much sugar maybe?
