Actually el Zorro was an Irish-English noble named William Lamport. He was born in Ireland, educated in England and had to leave because of his criticism of the English treatment of the Irish and his Catholic sympathies.
He went to Spain where he latinized his name to Guillem Lombardo. Apparently a scandalous love affair caused him to flee to Mexico where he was moved by the poverty and degradation of the indians and blacks.
His actions in Mexico led to tales among the lower classes of "el zorro", Spanish for the fox.

So you could say truthfully that el Zorro was an Irishman who came from Spain to Mexico and became el Zorro in Mexico.

According the the book (and TV series back in the '50's), Zorro, Spanish for "Fox", came from Spain. When he came of age, he went to California (not Mexico), as his father was a Don (minor noble). He did not like the crooked govenment there and resolved to do something about it: hence, Zorro.

The original Zorro was I take from Joaquin Murrieta. A real Mexican who was fighting in California against the migrating Americans taking all their land. The hall of recotds had burned down intentionally but the rulling powers didn't abide by it anyways so they started terrorizing and killing and raping the Canifornians anyways and most got away with it.The government sent many to stop this "Killer" Joaquin Murrieta but to no avail. A bounty hunter tried then finally put out his own reward for the head of Joaquin Murrieta. Their was more than one man with that name and more than one was killed. But when his head was finally displayed in a jar the job was cobsidetrf finished. He was identified by Joaquis lover who actually was teported to have lied. Most believe that he escaped and the legend grew.
