what the outcome might be for a patient infected with West Nile who has developed encephalitis? Less that one percent become infected with the most severe symptoms such as this, but I would like to know what the outcome is, if anyone should know of anyone who has actually gone through this, have they recovered and how much so?

Thanks.

Yepper that is what it is...poor pops...he is suffering brutally. Supposed to be over the "virus" now it's "recovery" but wow...he still looks like he has a long way to go...the secondary complications are what can do you in..not sure what damage has been done neurologically and how much he will recoup now. If he can't swallow or move, not going to last long that way you know? Shivers is right....

Many can recover completely. Some may have some deficits, memory, judgment, emotional, motor and/or coordination problems. A small number can be fatal.

Well you know encephalitis is a very severe form of swelling of the brain, of course with children and the elderly it is becomes very severe. It's almost like a mengentis..we hear so much of West Nile. I wish they had a vaccine for it...hope your dad gets better!
