If you're doing it with a pick, play the note on the lowest string (E and A) with your pick play the other note at the same time with your middle finger. OR you could do it without the pick, thumb on bottom, index or middle on top.

This looks like finger style to me, what it's saying is this, the seven and five are to be played together, the 7 is the seventh fret on the third string from the bottom, the 5 is the fifth string from the bottom, they are to be played together as one note, the two 8's are saying that they want the the 4th and the 6th strings in the eighth fret to be played together, etc..... the lines represent the strings of the guitar, the top one is the one closest to your legs when your holding the guitar on your lap, that's the high E, the number is the fret that your to play in, and the string that the number is on is the string that your to play, an x means not to play that string, and if this is strumming the unmarked strings are to be played open, I'm not sure what this song is....so I'm not sure if this is a finger style song or one that your playing chords. I read music notation, but I do know how to read tab, it's just that I would have to see the whole play to see what was required !!!!!!!! Good luck....I hope that I explained it to you in a way that you can understand !!!!!!! bye!

Use your thumb and the forefinger simultaneously while plucking the 5 and 7, the 8s, the 3 and the 5, and the 7s.
Added info: I'm not familiar with the melody line, but taking your plucking pattern I used a chord progression using only two notes as follows:
Dm, C7, F, B7, Bb, G, Am, F, G, E, Dm
It's a great chord progression.

Fingerstyle or Hybrid picking. Trying to mute the strings in between and strumming with a pick is going to make it harder than it has to be.
Hybrid picking would be using the pick to strike the lower notes and using a finger (typically your ring finger) to strike the higher notes at the same time. It is a bit strange at first but once you relax it isn't difficult.
