Because you didn't pay for the item and the giver probably paid with a credit card. It's usually store policy to issue store credit.

Maybe because you did Not give the store cash .

Sometimes gift buyers pick an item so the reicipient has an item but cannot convert it to cash for like drug use .
I do not know your gift giver or your issues ,
But , if they wanted you to have $$$ , they would have given you $$$$ in the first place .

Exchange the item for something similar that better suits your taste or size and send a thank-you note to the person who was so generous with you .

Because stores like to keep the money they have. They would rather not give any of it back.
