yes its a good deer round if you reload it yourself or use use imported ammo such as "Norma"
all the domestic ammo is downloaded to approximately 30-30 pressures because of the change in bullet size from .318 to .323 in 1905.
the 7.92x57mm s bullet (.323) would create dangerous pressures if fired in guns chambered for 7.92x57J (.318) so U.S. manufacturers load the 8x57 to low pressure so its safe in either chamber.
its still a good round, a little better than a 30-30 which was considered the standard deer rifle for most of the last century.

Occasionally. I have the standard 8x57 IS bolt-action and a drilling with the bottom barrel chambered for 8x57 IR (.318"). The latter is very accurate; and I'd like to replace the 8x57IRS double I let go of (a good shooting stick for hogs in cover). But 7mm Mauser is a better-balanced cartridge to my way of thinking, and if I feel the need for 8mm bore size, I'm more likely to pick up the 8x68.

I had a "Sporterized" version that someone had cut the stock back and put a scope on it in original 8mm. It was a decent shooting rifle and back in those days ammunition was plentiful and a lot cheaper, and Norma soft tipped ammunition was a pretty popular rifle round and easy to obtain. I managed to get a few Deer with it but then started to make enough money so I upgraded. I still have the Mauser put away in my gun safe..Lots of good memories..

Yeah, you can, but I wouldn't use it on anything smaller than a moose. Might not have much left if you hunt rabbit or squirrel with it. You'd have to go hunting with plastic sacks from Wal-Mart and a shovel.
