So i want to buy some acoustic guitar strings?! What am i looking for? I understand that heavier strings have more tone but are harder to play etc, but i don't understand the whole idea of using numbers to represent the string size. I've seen a whole set of strings refered to as 12's or 11's, but i don't really know what that means. Could anyone help me out?

Depends what you want.

First off - the numbers refer to the gauge of the high sounding "E" string in thousandths of an inch. This, "12s" or "O 12's" mean that the high E string is .012 of an inch thick.

I recommend Martin Marquis .012's for all around use. They are the best string for the money and you get the most use out of them.

If you are doing a one-off gig, or if you want to change your strings every week - go with the Martin Phospher bronze strings. They SOUND the best - but their tone dies quickly!

Conchobor2 has made good recommendations. In short, 12s are medium gauge strings while 11s are thin gauge. Those buying 10s and 9s are usually for electric guitars and the rock scene.

I recommend 12s because of better bass and volume while keeping the calluses thickened quicker.

If your confused go into a store like the Guitar Store and show the clerk the guitar that has the kind of strings that you want to play on, and then ask him what the gauge is and the identifying numbers....that way you'll know what you like the next time that you go in to buy them, there's too many to name them all here, and I don't want to confuse you, ok, bye

its basically how heavy the are, most of the heavy ones are like 55ish maybe idk, i just moved up to heavy acoustics. Thats all i've been palying since my amp is getting fixed. I reccomend D'Adarrio strings they really get the job done. Thats all i really use. I've been playing almost 2 years now.

Just get a set of Martin Phosphor/Bronze medium weight, they've never let me down. De adero's sound good too, but when they die, they go fast. Good luck.
