Most agencies have gone to the semi automatic AR15 by Colt or Bushmaster. Others have the M4. Since the famed Hollywood shoot out, the need for officers to be better armed has been improved by issuing the rifle to supplement the shotgun.
The AR is precise, and less of a danger to the public than the shot gun. The AR fires a .223 calibre round that is great for penetrating bodies and not exiting. The shot gun typically fires 9 pellets in a SPREAD that can send rounds down past the target. The AR is very precise and a proficient officers can shoot a man from 100 yards center of mass.

Yes, In LA half of the police department Carry a M16 in there cruiser. They started after a massive bank robbery in 2001 (i believe 2001) where the suspects were fireing at the LAPD and the suspects were carrying fully automatic AK47's and were completely covered in body armor that the police departments standered issue 9mm Beretta could not penetrate

Yes it is true. They also have K9 patrol units who are equally proficient at nailing a target in certain circumstances. As a former L.A. resident, whether you are innocent or guilty when an LAPD officer gives a warning, it isn't open for debate. Whether that is right or wrong is not an option nowadays, instant compliance is mandatory for every citizen. I would want one too given the opposition.

Some do..they have to qualify to be able to carry one....This was the result of the Hollywood bank shoot out when 2 armed robbers had fully automatic weapons and the cops had miniscual firepower in the beginning of it.

Don't worry, It's only a .223. They'll be lucky to shoot their way out of a wet paper bag. They need to issue M-14s. Those robbers in LA a few years ago were using AK-47s with 7.62 rounds (.308).
