When you buy a ticket, you "enter into a contract" to allow your name and likeness to be used for advertising and promotion purposes. So you can keep it a secret so long as you don't claim your winnings. But honestly, can you name a lottery winner? I suspect free-loading relatives, scam artists and ex's come out of the woodwork, though. :)

I think that many sweepstakes require that the person be willing to have his/her name reported publicly. Companies who run contests usually do report the names of the winners. I suppose this shows that they actually do give money out so people will not be afraid to enter the contest. But I don't think the lottery winner has to initiate the publicity.

Not likely in this day and age. Perhaps they could have their financial advisor or family member show up?

No they don't have to show themselves. In fact it is best they remain anonymous for security reasons.
