I agree with MLM... how ever...

I'm running without an anti virus program for 3 years now and yet have to encounter anything like a virus. why without software you ask? Simply because it slows down the pc/laptop's resources. Walk with me if you will... When you open a file it first has to be processed by the antivirus software to see if it safe to open, then it loads the file/program. If the program is big it significantly slows down the initial startup of the program it self. Now, I'm very impatient and have a very fast running laptop and it should not matter too much for the average person.
All I'm saying is that on Symantec and Mcafee you can run free scans, which I do frequently, without having the program on your pc, and slowing down your pc.
As long as you are not visiting "suspicious sites" and not opening mail that looks like junk and looks suspicious, you should be fine...

But... Don't take my word for it and don't sue me lol. This is just my opinion!

The McAfee AV is a different type of product. Lavasoft's Adaware is a spyware/adware removal tool whereas McAfee is a virus/trojan remover. Although there is some overlap between antivirus and antispyware products, both complement each other and do scan using different techniques.

These are completly different and preform different functions.
McAfee is Virus Software.
Lavasofts, Adaware and Spybot's Search and Destroy remove Adware, and Spy software you have unknowingly downloaded by visiting questionable sites, as well as some that are legit.
