Both seem to come from cage-free hens which are not fed hormones or antibiotics. Organic eggs are more expensive; why?

organic eggs come from chickens who are fed organic feed and not given antibiotics. They are still kept in cages and never see the light of day or feel the ground beneath their feet.

Cage free eggs come from chickens that may or may not be fed organic feed but they have the opportunity to go outside and smell fresh air. If they are really lucky, they get to feel dirt under their feet and maybe eat a bug.

I don't know why organic eggs are more expensive.

I know there are white eggs and brown eggs (and colored eggs ..ha). I've seen both white and brown eggs produced by chickens that have a large coop and little nesting places so by that I presume it must be a specific breed of chicken that lays the brown eggs. I'm sure that production farmers keep chickens in single cages and I presume that when they give eggs it's called "cage egg". I figure that free range is probably when chickens just have free run of the property and their owners just pick up the eggs from where they find them. It's difficult to make a choice upon which is kinder when you shop in a grocery store, however if you have a farmer in your area who has a large coop where the chickens can run and exercise then those eggs I would guess would have come from friendlier treated chickens.

Cage free chickens are just free range chickens from a farm, as opposed to chicken "factories". If their eggs aren't certified organic, then they probably aren't. The chickens may be fed antibiotics, or perhaps their feed isn't organic. Organic eggs are more expensive because it's more expensive to to raise chickens that way.

Oranic does NOT mean cage-free. It means no use of pesticides or hormones in chicken food. They can still live their pitiful lives in a tiny cage until old enough to butcher.

As for the price of organic eggs, "organic" anything is hot right now, and purveyors know ppl will pay more for it... unless they've been informed, as you just have been.
