It does indeed lose its freshness. It can smell and taste pretty skunky.

Yes it expires. Some bottles (Bud, Coors Lite) actually have dates on them. When people say beer is skunky that means it's gone bad and it does, in fact, smell like a skunk a little bit. You can drink it. I don't think it will make you sick. It will taste like ***, and the alcohol content may have gone up a bit since you bought it. But it's safe to drink. Usually beer goes bad from being refrigerated improperly (alternating periods of refrigerating and exposure to room temperature/heat). If it is kept refrigerated you can prolong the shelf life. Obviously if you open it, it will eventually go flat and taste nasty.

Most American macrobrews expire, but it takes a long time. They're brewed to endure lots of heating and cooling, plus age.
Some beers actually get better with age, like handcrafted ales.
But if you're just looking to get drunk, good luck. Try grain alcohol.

Oh yes, regular beers don't age well and that's why in most countries nowadays beer also has an expiry date (that's the date BEFORE it actually turns bad). It loses its freshness, and tastes flat and musty but as long as the bottle remains capped it keeps its alcohol content so you can still get drunk on it.

Beer normally has a shelf life of 6-8 months. After that, it will taste really musty and it will most likely won't hold it's carbonation for long after you open it. But it still retains all of it's alcohol content, so you sure can get drunk off of it if you so choose.

Beer definitely has a shelf life. It's not like wine or liquor which you can allow to age. And yes you can get drunk off of it, but it's going to be more nasty than it would have been with fresh beer.

Most beers go bad. The stronger ones (ie: barley wines, strong belgians) actually get better with age. You'll still get drunk on them.
