I have an old friend who was once an avid skydiver. She was once part of a group who planned to form a large circle of skydivers holding hands during free fall. They were trying for the world record and one man was equipped with a helmet camera to record the event. The plane would be jam packed full of jumpers and the cameraman would be the last one to jump, so he took his parachute off and sat on it. It was a long ride to 20,000 feet, cramped and uncomfortable.

At this point my friend turned on an old 16mm movie projector for me to watch and left the room. I could see the skydivers leaping out of the plane as quickly as possible to make room for those behind. The cameraman kept the film running as he leaped through the door. I could see the Earth below and a large circle of maybe fifty skydivers forming up, holding hands. They successfully broke the record. Then the circle broke up, with individual skydivers peeling off and popping their chutes. Eventually, there were no more skydivers below the cameraman and I realized he was repeatedly grabbing at his chest, where the ripcord handle should have been. He'd been so distracted operating the camera, he forgot to put his parachute back on. It was utterly heartbreaking to watch him repeatedly clawing for the ripcord, as he got closer and closer to the ground. About a second before impact, he rolled over onto his back.

I strongly suggest you check to insure you are, in fact, wearing your parachute! Leaps of faith are for fools.

This is why I do a check of three's before getting on the airplane and before jumping. My rig is connect to my body at three points, the legs and the chest. The three-ring system is in place and is correctly put together. I have my three handles, main, cut-away and reserve. I've got it all, I'm jumping!

I'd take the parachute to be on the safe side and not only check but double check. If you're leaving it faith I'll send flowers to your funeral!

If you question your faith, there is a chance that the parachute could disappear, so you are better off not checking.

You actually do need faith because you might be imagining the parachute.

I'd say that depends on whether or not the plane has taken off. If it's still on the ground I'd take it on faith. Otherwise you might want to check.
