A tourist arrived in Australia, hired a car and set off for the outback. On his way he saw a bloke having sex with a sheep. Deeply horrified, he pulled up at the nearest pub and ordered a straight Scotch. Just as he was about to throw it back, he saw a bloke with one leg masturbating furiously at the bar. "For ****'s sake!" the bloke cried, "what the hell's going on here? I've been here one hour and I've seen a bloke shagging a sheep, and now some bloke's wanking himself off in the bar!" "Fair dinkum, mate," the bartender told him, "you can't expect a man with only one leg to catch a sheep"

Well Advance Australia Fair was written to be an anthem. Waltzing Matilda was written as a bush ballad (then the lyrics altered by a tea company ... we now sing the lyrics that the tea company's ad campaign used) I personally find the Advance Australia Fair a very good anthem, and except for a few small changes and the removal of one verse a very patriotic and inspiring anthem (the references to "Briton" don't really relay a strength of Australia but a dependence ... so I would like to see them changed, but we don't generally sing the verses that include these references). The melody for the anthem could be "jazzed" up a bit, but then most anthems have a similar style. I reckon a good "rock" version would go down nicely. Only way the anthem would ever become a "hit" as a song! A Cold Chisel, Crowded House, Hunters & Collectors cover would see it go well! Waltzing Matilda is a good song for it's purpose. Storytelling the troubles of the rural lifestyle back at the turn of last century. I personally cringe at those singing it at sporting events ... they use to play it after the haka at rugby matches with NZ ... I know which one inspires and sends shivers down my spine every time I see it. Definitely not appropriate for an anthem, and does not embody the nation of Australia.
