My husband is adopting my child age 9. We are having a home study done this week. How long does the person stay at your home? Do I need to have all medications and cleaning supplies locked up? Someone sugessted that I do that but is it really nessary she has lived in our home and she does not get into cleaning supplies or medications. We do not have to lock then up but should I do so for the home study?

Let the social worker decide, but please make sure they are out of the child's reach. If she is 9 it isnt like she doesnt know better. In NY they come 2 times. Once to meet with each adult seperatly, then once to meet with your entire family. They dont come with the white gloves on LOL and they WANT you to pass, so they just basically want to be sure the home is a safe and secure environment for the child (as I have no doubt it is) and then they say OK and thats that;)

It totally depends upon the social worker. Their main focus is ensuring that the home is safe. IF they feel that the child is old enough that she won't be likely to get into things that she should know not to get into, then she probably won't really care. She is there to make sure that: the home is structurally safe, there is adequate room, the home is not unhealthy (mold, garbage, lead paint), etc.

A friend of mine just had a home study done and she had to put all of her medication, OTC or prescription, in a locked box, and all chemicals(including dish soap) have to be in a locked cabinet.

You shouldn't have to worry about them if she's 9. She knows better than to get into them. I think if she was a toddler it would be a different situation. So no, don't worry about locking them up.

That said, make sure everything is on a higher shelf.
