do you have to have an attorney for a step parent adoption? my sons bio father is signing over his rights, and has paid only half of the money to the lawyer, in turn the lawyer said he isnt going any further with this adoption until it is paid in full. My question is, since everything minus going to court has been done, do we have to have a lawyer? We are in KY, i dont know any of the laws here.. We started this process in March of this year... It is taking a very long time!! We just want to be a happy family!!!!!

If I were you, I'd work out an payment arrangement with the lawyer & make sure it all gets done perfectly and properly. People do step parent adoptions without an attorney, but I don't think it's advisable since too many things can go wrong that will cost you emotionally and financially.

You should ALWAYS have a lawyer involved with adoption! You can't go to court without one.

Why don't you want to pay the lawyer? That's how it works, you pay, he/she gives you his/her services.
