The bible forbids these practices. Stay far away from them as you will not be speaking to your "loved ones" ....but to demons.

Yes mam it is!!!! You are consulting another power other than God....if know a little of the bible..the Lord commanded that anyone who consults a medium or spiritist be put to death.
Mediums and people like that operate through familiar spirits, a familiar spirit is not the real the person but a counterfeit spirit who presents itself as the real person. A familiar spirit seemingly has knowledge about people and situations that make the presentation seem real. There are only two powers in the world...the power of God and the counterfeit power of the devil...sometimes what we call harmless isn't....now I don't believe in a devil under every bush....but those things draw some in because of the mystery or hidden knowledge....but his knowledge will take you to places you don't want to go....

Let me make one thing clear to you. There are two kinds of spirits. Evil spirits which are demons and good spirits which are Angels. There are no ghosts, poltergeists or in betweens. The dead cannot communicate with the living period. God's Word says: "as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all" (Ecclesiastes 9:5) "their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished....for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge or wisdom in Sheol(hebrew word for the grave). Demons impersonate the dead and they also have a partial understanding of future prophetic events. However, like Satan, they will lie or deceive. And those that dwell with such mockery of God will be lost to Him.

This is addressed specifically in scripture:
Deuteronomy 18:9-14
9 When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the Lord your God. 14 The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do so.
In addition to this, the 1st king of Israel, Saul, was killed because he consulted with a medium... really just the final straw of a wicked and prideful reign:
13 Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, 14 and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

This practice is banned from most churches, there is a great danger of getting in touch with nocive entities. So, it is a sin because you would be disobeying god's will, but most important, you should get advice. If you are christian you should seek your reverend or church leader advice. If you are catholic you must confess. The truth is that there is a lot of fraudulent mediums, but who assures that he or she is not an evil spiritualist trying to confuse and create chaos.... or who knows what? A true believer does not need to try to talk with dead. Instead lives a holy life waiting the day to reunite whit the loved ones who passed away....

religious code? I guess that would depend on the church or group you embrace your religion through. Sceances and haunted places aren't traditional Christian issues, so you may not find them on the agendas of most christian churches. Whether something is a sin or not is really between you and GOD. Man judges fallably on these issues. All we can really do is give our personal beliefs and opinions. But, to judge another's sins is just plain futile, in my opinion.

When you do that you are actually communicating with satan through demonic spirits and powers. The bible says to stay away from these sorts of people. Personally I believe that they may have power...some of them, because Satan is the prince of this earth so he can give power as he wishes but you neednt think that God is with those people.
Timothy 4:1-2: says "Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron," What are the doctrines of demons? They are:
soothsaying, interpreting omens, sorcery, conjuring spells, a medium, a spiritist or one who calls up the dead. This list of abominations is found in Deuteronomy chapter 18.
Please do not get caught up in that sort of thing..it is not of God.

As far as Christianity is concerned it is at best misguided to concern yourself too much either with the future or with the past, especially when tempted to use means which are so open to misuse or misinterpretation.
I guess we have our hands full serving the Lord in the present moment! The past should properly be laid to rest; the future - and our loved ones - may safely be left in God's hands.

No of course not. Communication with the dead has been an accepted part of mainstream religion for centuries. Lots of people pray to saints.

If you talk Christianity, then yes, it is against the code...same as women with shorn hair, men with long hair, working on the sabbath, eating unclean meat, and an endless list of no-nos.

is against God's will to do that, he prohibited that in his law because it was practice where the demons took over the person who is supposed to be the medium or the fortuneteller to predict the future in which case it can be wrong because the only one who knows what the future may bring is god. you can find more in the first books of the bible
