Try taking notes while you read. That should help.
Make sure to remove all distractions. No music,no phone you can even shut the window blinds if that would help.
I wish you the best.

Learn to read. I do not mean this in a derogatory sense. There is however a difference between reading the words and really reading a book. I am a senior in college and I can tell you I know how it feels to be overwhelmed by the amount of reading they give us at times. If however your are not able to read abook for pleasure, it is about ten times harder to read one, that you are not reading for pleasure. So my advice is to make sure that outside of assigned reading you are reading things you enjoy.

I also learned from a study course, not to attempt to read anything longer then an hour without taking a 15 min. break. That way your mind can relax and absorb what you have read. And if this is to long cut it down even more.

Also if you try summing the concepts of each paragraph in a short sentence or two it will help you to focus while you are reading the material.

Read outloud - this might sound simple but look at it this way. when you read something it comes into your mind through one gate - your eyes. If you read out loud that makes it come it through a second gate - your ears and that means you will probably stay awake better and comprehend better. If you really have something that you need to comprehend for a test then you may need to memorize it by saying it outloud while you read it and then copying down what you said (writing it out) and then having a friend or parent ask you questions about it. That is the best way to go.

Find a yet comfortable place with peace and quiet and think of nothing but the story. Read and open your mind, carefully reading the descriptions in the book and don't think of anything else. Pretend it's the best book in the world.
