My personal favourite is Placido Domingo. I agree that Carreras is possibly the most evocative, and that the late Pavarotti had the most powerful voice, but Domingo transcended the operatic and lyrical genres effortlessly. Carreras always had to 'gear up' for the high notes and big finishes, and Pavarotti's voice did not sit well with the more balladic numbers - he always produced "the voice" - whereas Domingo simply changed his style to suit without loss of quality. Having said all of that, they were all three tremendous voices in their own right.
