Are you asking if the government paid for your allowances? Or whether members of the government receive allowances ? In your case, I wouldn`t know. In the latter case, yes all ministers and MP.`s get certain expenses, for duties that are performed in the course of their work. They may also receive things like a house /car etc. But these `perks` are now assessed by the inland revenue at their face value and the recipients of them have to pay tax on them at the `going rate`. Just like the rest of us!

I was in the feds for 32 years. My experience on the housing allowance is different, and may answer your question. Otherwise, you should be checking with the financial officer in your division.

Anyway, every year that I received some kind of allowance, I put in a form that I made a claim on that as I recall had a copy of my 1040, and I received a check that was supposed to pay the additional taxes that I was supposed to have paid, as that allowance was taxable. Of course, that was back in 1985. Chances are that that has changed.

When you are in the military, your paycheck is cut by an agency of the US government so of course the government pays them. Quarters and Rations allowances are not taxable.

If you are a Civil Service employee, all of your pay is taxable. Most Civil Service employees receive a base bay plus a location allowance based upon the local cost of living where you work. That location allowance is fully taxable.

Welcome to the real world. I work for the federal gov't, and the only time you get paid for housing/food is either when you are traveling for work (like conferences) or sent to another station on detail. Usually, you will be set up with a gov't credit card and will have the hotel reservations and food allowances listed on it.

Non-military government employees typically don't get additional allowances.
