Circumcision. Do you think you know better than your god?

My opinion is that it is abuse and mutilation. And I do not understand how a person's faith in an all-powerful, all-knowing god leads them to accept such practices (male and female circumcision), especially when carried out on infants. Doesn't it seem like they're saying they know better than their 'maker'?

Dancingnancy and others: my point is not that we should accept how some 'god' 'created' us. Of course, as mature adults we can choose to have corrective surgery - it is (or should be) a free world. What I question is the logic that worships an all-powerful god then mutilates (often in a hideous fashion) infants and youngsters they should love and nurture, rather than slice and torture! Seems like they're 'correcting' their god's design flaws. And btw, I do not limit my comments to christianity - it is only one of the guilty religions of the planet.

It's an act done by sadists and masochists. Religion is only an excuse. They enjoy seeing blood and they thrive on inflicting pain on innocent and vulnerable human beings and possibly other animals, too if given the chance.

Saying it is for hygiene reasons is THE weak argument. Just help your children bathe properly. Only inadequate and abusive parents would hide their sadism behind an excuse like 'religion'.

I don't agree with any circumcision of either males or females. And some of the arguments in the answers are pretty weak too. The fact that it's suppossed to be more hygienic and reduces the spread of stds is stupid. In the civilised world is it so difficult to wash every day and practice safe sex? I can understand when the religions first came about people lived differently then, they couldn't wash as often and didn't really know about stds so to make it part of a religion was a good way to keep the population clean and std free. But in civilised worlds it shouldn't really be needed. And yes I realise that stds are on the increase but surely we should educate kids rather than chopping bits off.

Why do some of you think an uncircumsised penis looks strange? How can something in its natural form look strange? Most penises look great either way - but a foreskin is so much fun, you really don't know what you're missing! Only fix it if it's broke...

What is possibly the most shocking thing is that, in todays world, these are still practiced like they once were in ancient times... In the late 1990's in New York, a Rabbi was convicted for spreading oral herpes to several young boys he was circumcizing - the ritual involves the rabbi cutting and foreskin and then SUCKING IT OFF the boy's member, and spitting out the blood and skin. This guy had oral herpes and passed it to the kids, all because of "tradition".

Well the doctors knew better in my case. The foreskin was very tight apparently and they thought it would give me lots of problems later in life so I got snipped. I do not know what problems this causes; never noticed any in my case.
Well had I dated or got serious with a Jewish girl that would have made things easier!

Female circumcision is a tribal cultural thing and not religious.
These cultures were swallowed up by Islam and I guess they never shook the habit. Nevertheless it should be banned world wide.

Here's a good site on why it's so wrong. After I know the problems it causes later in life, I'd never do that to my son! And putting a kid through horrible pain like that is wrong no matter what you say. How DARE a parent even THINK of doing it! http://www.mothersagainstcirc.org/

And it's been proven that there is no basis for hygenically cutting it. the foreskin actually protects, it does NOT cause infections and it's just as easy to clean with or without. Excessive cleaning is one of the causes for infections and irritation.
