40 pounds more is a significant difference. I don't think how far elevated off the scale you are is going to change your weight by 40 pounds - if anything it seems like it might make you lighter. Shoes do make a difference tho and the weight of them plus your clothes can easily add 3-5 pounds. I tend to weigh more at the doctor as well, but usually it's 5 pound or so variance. Perhaps the scale you are using on a normal basis needs to be calibrated or something.

The difference is probably in the scales. They are probably calibrated differently. I remember a gym I went to had a scale. People would get on it and if they thought that it was off, they would turn the knob to adjust it. By the end of the day, that scale was so out of wack it was completely unusable.
I would be the doctor's office scale is probably calibrated correctly. Not 100% sure of that. It can happen.
What you can do to check yours is to get a known weight and weigh it. Lets say you have a 25 pound weight at home. That should weigh 25 pounds on your home scale. Put it on there and check and see. Adjust your scale if you need to.

It could be the doctor has a much more accurate scale. but nope. if you weigh a block and then you weigh you and then you weigh you standing on the block the result will be the same as your weight the blocks weight when weighed separately.
Next time you go to the doc have him weigh you again with shoes off if you are concerned. I'd think about other clothing too. leather jackets with metal. belt buckles. boots with steel in them. just strip down at the docs.
and maybe buy a new scale for yourself.

Shoes don't make you weigh 40 lbs more. When's the last time you weighed yourself? If it's been a while, maybe you have put on 40 lbs. Or, maybe your scale at home is wrong. And, no, there's no difference in weight that comes from how far off the scale you are.

Everyone weighs more (significantly more) on the doctor's scale! I'm not joking. I always kick my shoes off too (at the doc's office) Don't think the shoes make the difference. I think it has to do with the quality of the scale available to the average shopper and the medical practitioner! NO JOKE.

whatever scale you normally use could be way off, the shoes will make a little difference but only about a pound. My home scale is 10lbs off so the day I go to the Dr I set it to show the same as what the Dr's showed.

Best time to weight yourself, right after you get up, and do your bathroom business. Weight yourself naked. Your clothes and shoes will add a few pounds, 5 at most. Your scale at home is also probably way off, even if you have it zeroed, invest in a new one, and the most accurate ones are not digital.

Either your usual scale, or the doctors scale, is giving false readings.
Only the weight of the shoes (and other clothes) will be added to your own bodyweight.

Depending on the type of scale you are using to weigh yourself they will display different results due to old off balance scales that don't really provide a true reading most of the time.
I would weigh myself with or without socks on a digital scale. they tend to take better readings, along with being able to read your BMI & BMF.
