A perfect picnic is a red and white checkered cloth on the ground, under a tree. A basket that contains ham and swiss and (good) mustard on croissants, cut up cheese, grapes, some crackers or french bread loaf with something delectable to spread on it, like alouette cheese spread, and some pinot grigio or reisling wine. After snacking, lay back with the one you love and watch the clouds, talk about how good life is, and fall asleep in each others arms.
To start off good, walk down a trail or, preferrably, by a lake or river and watch the dragonflies and butterflies. Take pictures. Kiss each other a lot. Be happy. Dream. Then, do the eating thing.
Of course, if you are picnic-ing by yourself, simply bring a book you love. Enjoy nature first and be happy that you don't have to worry about someone else and their enjoyment - it's just nature giving you a private performance. Bring a book you absolutely love to read while noshing (for me that would be Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery). Don't forget the nap under the clouds.

I like the way these folks think!!! My perfect picnic comes after a nice hike in nature, usually around a lake. Out comes the picnic basket that has:
1. Tableclothe and real cloth napkins
2. Glasses for wine
3. Bread board for the cheese
4. A nice chilled bottle of Pelligrino
5. A nice Sangeovese
6. Skewers of chicken grilled marinated chicken thighs
7. Containers of cole slaw and pasta salad
8. Spanish Manchenga and mushroom brie
9. A loaf of Potato Rosemary Bread
10. Sweet butter
11. Raspberry blondies for dessert
Yum!

A nice spot under a tree over looking water (ocean, lake, river) Some fried chicken, mac salad with Itilian dressing base, and a dessert. Don't forget the beer or wine, and most important the ice chest to keep things cool. Have a nice time.

Me & my husband, a picnic blanket on the grass by a lake, fresh baguette bread, cheeses, patés, a bottle of chilled champagne (ok, white or rosee wine would be fine...) and fresh fruits (strawberries, grapes, honeydew melon, pineapple, peaches) with angelfood cake for dessert.
